As Lent Approaches
Here we are. The Eagles are Super Bowl champions and what a game. Amidst all of the cheering and hoopla at the presentation of the Lombardi Trophy, it was inspiring to hear Doug Pederson, Zach Ertz and Nick Foles publicly give praise and thanks to God for the opportunities, the work, and the gifts they are experiencing. I’ve heard that many in the Eagles organization pray together weekly. Putting God first, and foremost, is essential on our life’s journey through this world, no matter who we are.
Which brings us to Ash Wednesday, which is this week. It is the first day of Lent and a day of fast and abstinence. And yes it is also February 14. Elsewhere in the bulletin and on our various communication platforms, you will find information to help make this Lent a memorable one, i.e. tools to help spend this Lent focused on prayer, fasting and abstinence as a means of growing closer to God and becoming more passionately Jesus’ disciple. May we help one another and encourage one another on this Lenten journey to Easter. We have some copies of the Word Among Us booklets for Lent available at the Church doors as well.
We are in the midst of National Marriage Week USA (February 7-14). Sunday, February 11, is World Marriage Day and this year also World Day of the Sick. The US Bishops offer resources for the defense and promotion of marriage as a life-long union of one man and one woman. You can check out their website www.usccb.org as well as the websites: ForYourMarriage.org, PorTuMatrimonio.org, and MarriageUniqueForAReason.org. These resources include interactive aspects as well as recommendations of resources to help live to the full the gift of marital love as a disciple and child of God. In this day and age, in the midst of the cultural confusion surrounding us, it is important to tap into the resources which are being made available to help protect and strengthen this precious vocational calling. At all the weekend Masses, we will offer a special blessing for all our married couples. May God’s graces flow abundantly onto all married couples as they reflect the love of God to the world.
Keep all the participants in our Discovering Christ series in your good prayers. Next Saturday, they will be participating in a daylong retreat. May the Holy Spirit lead and guide them in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Also pray for our students who will receive First Penance on February 24. They will encounter the mercy and healing love of God in this awesome Sacrament for the first time.
Next weekend, we will have available special Saint Eleanor magnets for you to take home. Families with children in Holy Cross and in our PREP program have already received them through school and through PREP. They are very nice and include information on our schedules. They will look sharp on your refrigerators and give you a snapshot of pertinent information for your use.
God bless you, God love you,
