Lent Arrives

Dear Friends,

A blessed Lent to one and all! The holy season of prayer, penance and almsgiving is upon us. I hope and pray that all of us will find this time to be a period of renewal with our Lord. The readings this weekend remind us of the Fall of Adam and Eve in the garden and the temptations of Jesus in the desert. Our Scriptures are focusing our attention as to why we need Lent.

In his reflection on our readings, Monsignor Joseph Pellegrino writes “At the beginning of Lent we are summoned to take a serious look at the conduct of our lives. Are we committing the original sin of pushing God aside? Is He a low priority in our lives and therefore no priority at all? Lent calls us to examine how we are using His Gifts. Are we selfish? Do we take advantage of others? Or do we recognize our dependence on God and do whatever we can to serve His presence in others?” Helpful thoughts to begin this journey towards Easter.

The installation Mass of Archbishop Nelson Perez on February 18 was a beautiful celebration with sacred music that inspired. The Archbishop’s homily was also very moving and encouraging as well as challenging. He spoke on hope, Christian hope, hope in Christ. Once again, I invite you to check out his homily online as we begin our journey of Lent. He ended his homily with a phrase that he has shared with everyone he has ever confirmed. He wants us also to hold onto it always ~ “Never underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit working in you, through you, and despite you!”

Our parish family members journeying through Discovering Christ had their retreat last Saturday. They are quickly coming to the end of their seven sessions but will have the opportunity to explore both Following Christ and Sharing Christ in the coming months. At the retreat they had the opportunity in prayer to personally accept the Lordship of Jesus Christ in their lives and to surrender to the Holy Spirit. How blessed we are to have Jesus Christ as our Savior and the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us through this life into heaven. I truly hope that all of you will also participate in Discovering Christ as we continue to make it available here.

Many of you take advantage of our book and CD kiosk in the narthex. We partner with Stewardship Mission of Faith who make these titles available in many parishes in the area. They do not charge for these items but depend on donations from the people who make use of these resources, over 10,000 resources were distributed in our parish in 2019. The books and CD’s are impactful and we are glad so many are making use of these high quality resources. Be sure to pray for them and for this work of evangelization.

God bless you, God love you,

Monsignor McCulken
