Dear Friends,

We rejoice in the ordination of six men to the priesthood this weekend for our Archdiocese. These men will begin their first assignments as newly ordained priests on June 18. Please pray for them as they strive to surrender to the Father’s will, be open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit and share the Gospel with all they will serve. What a great weekend for ordination as we celebrate the awesome feast of Pentecost!

Are you waiting for a Pentecost experience? In other words, are you looking for the physical happenings of a strong, driving wind, tongues of fire, speech in other languages? Perhaps we think that the power of the Holy Spirit coming down at Pentecost is the only way the Spirit operates. Of course, that would be putting God into a box, into our preconceived notions.

The Holy Spirit has come to you and to me at Baptism and then at Confirmation. We are living temples of the Holy Spirit. If we are a bit lethargic spiritually, perhaps it is because we have not personally and consciously surrendered ourselves to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. If we have done so, then perhaps we need to recommit ourselves to the Lord Jesus. After all, most of us were baptized as infants and confirmed at a young age.

Have you ever made a conscious act and prayer accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord? Have you made Jesus the Lord of everything, everyone, every circumstance, every relationship, every aspect of your life? Are you holding something back from Jesus in any area of your life?

Accepting Jesus as our Lord requires that we be all in! Discipleship is not a part-time life. Discipleship and living a life in the Spirit is more than Sunday Mass, more than following the Commandments, more than knowing the catechism, more than being nice. It is a deeply personal and radically intimate relationship and walk with the Savior of the world by the power of the Holy Spirit. As Saint Paul reminds us “…yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me” (Galatians 2:20).

Our ChristLife series (Discovering Christ, Following Christ and Sharing Christ) as well as our Walking With Purpose (for women) are places where you can come to encounter Jesus Christ more intimately, more personally and more profoundly no matter where you are on your walk with the Lord.

Until we surrender to Jesus Christ as Lord and until we surrender to the Holy Spirit dwelling in our souls, we cannot understand nor appreciate all that God is doing for us personally, within us and through us. Until we consciously accept the gift of our Baptism in Christ and the life of the Spirit, we are like someone who is walking around with sunglasses on at night. Coming to know the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our own lives and the work of the Holy Spirit in our souls turns on the radiant light of God both within us and through us for the world. May we embrace Jesus as Lord and may we accept the help of the Holy Spirit in everything! Together let us grow as disciples and help others to be disciples!

“Come O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth!”

God bless you, God love you,

Monsignor McCulken
