World Mission Sunday

Dear Friends,

This weekend is World Mission Sunday, which is always held on the next to last Sunday in October. Initiated in 1926 by Pope Pius XI, this Sunday joins all Catholics around the world in prayer and    acknowledgement that we are all called to be missionary disciples.  It is an opportunity for us to participate through prayer and financial assistance in the work of the Gospel both at home and in foreign lands.

Now, of course, we just welcomed Father Bernard from the Diocese of Orlu who spoke at all our Masses on the weekend of     September 22-23.  Our parish family responded extremely generously to his appeal to help the people of his Diocese in Nigeria.  Thank you so very much for your most generous response!  It was truly amazing!  Father Bernard has written to express his gratitude for the warm reception he received from our parish family.  Normally, the Mission Co-op Appeal happens in July or August but Father Bernard’s schedule was a bit later.

Unlike the Mission Co-op Appeal, which supports a particular Mission, this weekend’s appeal is for the Missionary efforts of Catholic Missionaries around the entire world.  This year, this weekend also initiates for our Archdiocese a year dedicated as the Extraordinary Year of Mission to conclude October 2019, which Pope Francis has dedicated as Extraordinary Missionary Month for the whole Church.  May this year and the celebration of October 2019 enable all of us to embrace our call to be missionary disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the world.

Our parish family has initiated and supports two dynamic, interesting and life-changing programs to assist our people to embrace their relationship with Jesus Christ more intimately, and to embrace the spirit of being missionary disciples.  These are ChristLife (for men and women, young and senior) and Walking With Purpose (for women of all ages).

It really is not sufficient enough to come to Mass regularly, to pray frequently and to do good works.  Christianity is about a person, about Jesus Christ, Son of God, Son of Mary, Savior of the world.  We need to grow in our relationship with the Lord Jesus personally and intimately.  We need to share our relationship with Him, joyfully with others.  There can be no excuses.  Our salvation rests in, with and through Jesus Christ.  In Him alone!

What are we doing to strengthen, increase, and deepen our relationship with Jesus?  How are we sharing Jesus with our brothers and sisters?  What does God our Father expect of us as His sons and daughters in this difficult moment of history?  Where are we in being and becoming Saints of God to lead and help our brother and sisters?

“May the heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament, be praised, adored and loved with grateful affection, at every moment, in all the Tabernacles of the world, even to the end of time.  Amen.”  In, through and with Him (Jesus), do we find life, hope, mercy and

forgiveness.

God bless you, God love you,

Monsignor McCulken
